Structural Fills
Structural fills are typically constructed in layers of uniform thickness and compacted to the desired density in a manner to control the compressibility, strength and hydraulic conductivity.
Structural fills have been successfully completed with conditioned FA, FBA and Pond Ash (a mixture of FA and FBA reclaimed from settlement ponds). The high strength, lightweight, low compressibility and free-draining properties of the products make them suitable fill materials for use in road embankments.
In Australia, for example, power stations have successfully increased the capacity of the ash settlement pond by building above the dam wall using compacted conditioned FA.
