A new "Tech Brief" published by the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center at the University of Iowa supports the use of harvested fly ash in highway infrastructure.
Sponsored by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, "Use of Reclaimed Fly Ash in Highway Infrastructure" provides a summary intended for use by highway agencies and contractor engineers in understanding the beneficial use of previously disposed coal fly ash in concrete pavements.
"Harvested fly ash is becoming a principal source of fly ash for the concrete industry in some geographic areas and is soon expected to become a significant portion of the total fly ash supply," the Tech Brief says.
The document provides background on the benefits of fly ash in concrete; an overview of ash beneficiation and harvesting technologies; information on standards, specifications, and testing; and case studies of harvesting projects.
